12 Days of Christmas – Day 11

For 12 days I’m sharing ideas for stocking stuffers or gifts for the sewers in your life (or to add to your own list). Here’s another idea:

Christmas Gift Idea #10:  Olfa Rotary Cutter and Mat

While I’m a big fan of sewing shears for cutting fabric, and have suggested Famore scissors as a sewing gift, I also have come to rely on my rotary cutter and mat. I actually bought mine about 20 years ago (not kidding) and only started using it about 3 months ago (a fact!). I didn’t quite get it, to tell you the truth, but at a recent sewing workshop many of the ladies were using them and gave me a quick instruction.

Rotary cutters have come a long way since mine and if I had my pick, I’d now go for this one:

45mm cutterThis is the Olfa Deluxe Rotary Cutter. It has a 45mm blade and an ergonomic handle that makes holding/cutting easy and comfortable. It’s also made for left or right-handed users – so you can cut from any angle without a problem. (On mine, it’s clear intended for use on one side, so I have to be in the right position to cut close to the mark.) You can order this from Olfa directly on their website for about $32.00, but you can also buy it at Joann with a coupon for a much better deal.

pinking blade

While Olfa also makes a 60mm cutter, I’d go with the 45mm because you can also get a pinking blade. This is helpful to avoid fraying with certain fabrics and it’s not available for the 60mm cutter. In fact, this cutter, with an additional pinking blade (about $14.00 at Joanne), would be great to give together!

All that said, a rotary cutter is no good without a cutting mat. You don’t want to use the razor sharp cutter on a table, which will scratch it and dull the blade. The self-healing Olfa mats are great. cutting matThey come in various sizes, but I find the 24×60″ really useful. Like the cutter, I’d suggest buying this where you can use a coupon, like Joann. They have this one regular price for $69.99

Combine all three – the Olfa Deluxe Rotary Cutter, an additional pinking blade and a 24 x 60″ self healing cutting mat and you have a great gift!

I hope this gives you an idea you can use for gifting this season.

Merry Christmas and Happy Sewing!
