12 Days of Christmas – Day 5

For 12 days I’m sharing ideas for stocking stuffers or gifts for the sewers in your life (or to add to your own list). Here’s another idea:

Christmas Gift Idea #5:  Point Presser/Clapper

Pressing is an essential part of sewing. If there is a sewer on your list who does not have a point presser/clapper – consider this.

clapper

I did not have one for a long time – didn’t really understand the need. However, since I bought mine – I swear, I use it All. The. Time!

Before, if I was sewing sleeves, or anything narrow, I’d sort of “do my best” to press out the sewn seam. Now, with the point presser, it’s a piece of cake! It’s great for getting into corners (yes, as its name implies!). I’ve made several pillows as gifts and in the past, when making pillows (or anything with similar corners), I’d use a chopstick to turn the corners out (really). This is SO much more precise and also enables you to press the seam at the same time. Honestly, I have not yet had need for the “clapper” function – but expect to. Especially if I join Goodbye Valentino’s 2014 RTW Fast, which I am seriously considering!

I bought mine from Pamela Leggett as a requirement for a class I took with her this fall. So glad I did. It really helps makes a difference in the final look of home sewn garmets/projects. I even used it this past weekend to press out a hard to reach seam in my beach bag project.

You can buy a point press/clapper like the one above direct from Pamela through Pamela’s Patterns for $34.00. (You can probably find them elsewhere too, but I’m really happy with the quality of this one).

Bottom line – if you have a sewer on your list who does not have one of these – it would be a really useful, thoughtful gift. If you don’t have one already, you may want to put it on your own list before it’s too late!

Merry Christmas and Happy Sewing!
